Information for bicycle travelers
Peru isn't an easy country for cyclists. Most of the tourist attractions are deeply inside the country mainly in the mountain area of the Andes. To reach them you have to cross many passes and some of them are counting of the highest of the world. Also the air is getting very thin in high altitude so a good condition and also a good acclimatization is in fact a basic requirement.
The basic main highway and also the shortest connection from the north to the south (also from the south to the north) is the Panamericana who runs mostly on the coast side of the country. This route isn't very nice because there is a lot of traffic and mostly, around 95%, this route is crossing the coast side dessert. On the Panamericana particular you will have an edge of the road there you can drive safely. But take care if the distance to the overtaking vehicles. The air suction or the spin from the heavy trucks or buses, if the distance isn't so big, can smash you on the road.
Another tip to the Panamericana highway:
The predominant wind direction is from the south. This wind can be very strong, so if you wan' a take this street best is come from the south. Headwind indeed can be a very stressing factor for a cyclist.
Best season (dry season)
Highland: April to October
Coast: December to April
Spare parts
Only a very few Peruvians use the bicycle as an sporting equipment. For this reason you wont find quality spare parts outside Lima. Also in Lima you wont find spare parts in the highest category but the have a good and cheap bazaar on the Avenida Emanzipación and Cañete. Here you will find all that you can get in Peru of spare parts for bicycles. If you driving a bicycle with wheels over 26' inch best come with some spare tyres because you wont find spare parts for this wheel size in Peru (or South America). Before you start you have to think out what kind of spare parts is best to take with you. This depends of where do you want to go and how long your trip will be.
